San Diego Gaming Community: Local Stores, Events & LFG
A guide to San Diego's gaming community: local game stores, tabletop events, video game venues, Magic: The Gathering, D&D groups, and how to find your people in SD.
San Diego has an active local gaming community spread across tabletop, card games, video games, and board games. If you need a Friday Night Magic pod, a long-running D&D campaign, or just a place to play Switch with strangers, there’s a corner of SD for you.
Local Game Stores (LGS)
Game Empire is the anchor LGS in San Diego, located on Shawline Street in Kearny Mesa. The store runs WPN-sanctioned Magic: The Gathering events including Friday Night Magic, prereleases, and Commander nights, and has a large attached game room for tournaments and open play.

Tabletop RPG Scene
D&D and tabletop RPGs are alive and well in San Diego. Game Empire runs official D&D Adventurers League sessions, which is a good entry point if you don’t have a group. Roll20 and Meetup.com both have active San Diego D&D communities for online-hybrid and in-person play. The SD Tabletop Gaming Facebook group has thousands of members posting LFG listings regularly.
Looking for a group? Search “San Diego D&D” or “San Diego RPG” on Meetup.com. Several game stores host open-table sessions designed for people who are new to the area or between groups.
Video Game Venues
- Coin-Op Game Room (North Park and Gaslamp): 40+ arcade machines, pinball, craft beer
- Arcade Monsters (East Village): 200+ classic and modern games near Petco Park
- GameSync Esports Center (Kearny Mesa): PC gaming center and esports venue
- Round1 (Mission Valley): Japanese arcade chain with a location on the way. Rhythm games, crane machines, and bowling.
Warhammer & Miniature Gaming
Games Workshop has an official Warhammer store in Rancho Peñasquitos (Plaza Rancho Peñasquitos on Carmel Mountain Rd) that runs regular 40K and Age of Sigmar events. Game Empire also has dedicated Warhammer evenings. The SD Warhammer community is active on Reddit and several Discord servers. Search “San Diego Warhammer” to find the current ones.
Magic: The Gathering Locals
Beyond Game Empire, Friday Night Magic runs at multiple stores across the county. Commander (EDH) has surged in popularity and most LGS now run dedicated Commander pods on weeknights. Check Wizards’ store and event locator for current locals near any SD zip code.
